Flor da Rosa
Flor da Rosa

It all began in the 14th century, when D. Álvaro Gonçalves Pereira decided to transfer the Portuguese headquarters of the Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, today known as the Order of Malta, to near the town of Crato, founding the monastery of Santa Maria de Flôr da Rosa.

With time, houses were erected around the fortified monastery, and gave rise to the village. In 1834 the orders were abolished, but there remains a village with a poetic name, and a castellated palace, skilfully and tastefully restored as the Pousada, which still preserves a good part of the austere beauty that was created by the monk-knights.

In the small streets, where time passes slowly, it is still possible to see, as well as the ancient fountain and the small seventeenth century palace (rural tourism), the work and the art of those who mould clay with their hands. In this council area, as well as embroidery work, there are also artisans whose vocation is working in wood and in granite.

In a rustic or in a sophisticated environment, the gastronomy calls you to discover everything from sarapatel to tecolameco, the names of an alchemy of tastes which beg to be accompanied by the wines of Portalegre.

About one kilometre to the south, the town of Crato provides a complementary heritage to help you understand the strong impression left by the Order of Malta.

A dozen kilometres to the south is Alter do Chão, with its ancient stud farm. Around twenty kilometres to the east is situated the town of Portalegre, with its important collection of monuments, and the beginning of the Natural Park of Serra de S. Mamede.
