Considered to be a mediaeval town, a fact well documented in its museum nucleus, Terena, from its lofty position, looks out over the vast Alentejan plain that spreads out all around it. The castle, located at the end of Rua Direita, was especially important in defining the border between Portugal and Castille. It is also in Rua Direita that the buildings of the greatest importance in this little town are to be found: the court, the Misericórdia (house of charity), the hospital, the pillory and the parish church. Particularly charming are the streets of the old town, which intersect at irregular intervals, defeating the uneven terrain. The whitewashed houses with their ochre-coloured bands around the bottom are complemented by pots of flowers of every colour, which the inhabitants like to display in front of their houses. The Sanctuary of Boa-Nova, a little way outside the town, marks out Terena as a place of pilgrimage, bringing annually, around Easter time, people from all over to an unequalled religious, country festival.

By car:
- From Évora, take the IP2 as far as Caridade, from there follow the N256 to Reguengos de Monsaraz, and from there take the R255 to Terena.
- From Redondo, follow the N254 to Alandroal, and then take the R255 to Terena.
- From Alandroal, take the R255 to Terena.
