Overview of S. Cristóvão

Half way (20 kms) between Montemor-o-Novo and Alcácer do Sal, São Cristóvão is a village set in the immensity of the plain and on the route to the beaches. The birth of this village has its origin intimately linked to a legend; it attributes to St Christopher the choice of the location of the church of which the people would choose him to be the patron saint and unifying symbol of their faith.

The narrow valley of the S. Cristovão River is home to various “monuments” of natural architecture.
To find these places, it is best to make use of the existing pedestrian or mountain-bike routes and, with the help of the explanatory leaflets, discover the beauties of the parish area.


HOW TO GET TO SÃO CRISTÓVÃO

DISTANCES

São Cristóvão – Montemor-o-Novo: 21 km
São Cristóvão – Alcácer do Sal: 28 km
São Cristóvão – Évora: 57 km

By car:
- From Montemor-o-Novo, take the N253 to São Cristóvão.
- From Alcácer do Sal, take the N253 to São Cristóvão.
- From Évora, take the N114 to Montemor-o-Novo and then the N253 to São Cristóvão.

By train:
- From Entrecampos Station in Lisbon, take the train to Alcácer do Sal. The journey takes approximately one hour twenty minutes.


EVENTS

- Festival dedicated to São Cristóvão and to São Sebastião – 3rd Sunday in July.
- Pilgrimage on horseback – a national event that links Moita to Viana do Alentejo and passes through the village of S. Cristóvão, normally in the last days of Lent.
