São Gregório
São Gregório

Seen from afar, it appears more a traditional Alentejan farm complex. When you arrive, it appears like a toy village, with its houses tucked comfortably one against the other. Everything appears small, with the spaces only those that are necessary, and the dimensions just sufficient. All of this is part of its gracefulness, and a good part of its charm. The rest is found in the chapel of S. Gregório (16th–17th centuries), in the powerful presence of the Serra D’Ossa, and in the extensive vineyards, stretching lazily towards the sun which matures their bunches of grapes. Emigration took away the people who were born here, but tourism has washed the white walls and restored human warmth.

Two kilometres away, the village of Rio de Moinhos maintains a very active economy, particularly in the production of hand-made cheese. As well as wine, honey, olive oil and lamb are still well appreciated. These products are at the base of the gastronomy, which can be enjoyed in the local restaurants. The church of S. Tiago (13th–17th centuries) merits the time spent on a visit.

In the area, you can also engage in a sign posted walking tour, or go by car to the monument of the battle of Claros Montes (17th century), to the convent of Nª. Sª. da Luz (17th–18th centuries) and to Borba, administrative centre of the council area. The interests here are the Mediaeval castle and the Quinta (Farm) do General, the Igreja Matriz (parish church – 15th century), the churches of Servas and of S. Bartolomeu (17th century), the Misericórdia church, and the convent of Nª. Sª. do Bosque (Our Lady of the Wood – 16th–18th centuries), the wayside altars of the Stations of the Cross and the Bicas fountain (18th century).
