THE VILLAGE OF IRON AND HERESY

In the 13th century Fra’ Dolcino settled down in Cimego, a village in Chiese Valley. Was he attracted by the local craft of iron forging or by the tenacity of its people? We don’t know. We just know that in this village ancient medieval traditions and, more importantly, the memory of Heresy have survived until the present time.
The village of Cimego, with its 420 inhabitants, rises on a terraced slope at 557 m. above sea level, on the right bank of the river Chiese. It is a small village in the south-west of Trentino, far-away from the main cities: about 65 km from
Trento, 80 km from Brescia and 60 km from Rovereto.

The small stream Salùm divides the village into two parts and three districts: Quartinago on the right bank of the river, Balbarone and Villa on the left bank.

The village reflects the same architectonic style of the Basse Giudicarie valleys: narrow and steep roads, stretching along the walls of high and old houses. The most significant building is Casa Marescalchi, which is an example of the traditional house from the Giudicarie valleys, comprising stables and cellars, two floors and open lofts.

The area around Cimego is also very interesting from the geological viewpoint since according to the research it used to be a Roman mining area in past times.

Furthermore, it’s one of the fewest locations in Trentino where you still can find the remains of Roman epigraphs.
