Santa Susana
Santa Susana

On the road from Montemor-o-Novo to Alcácer do Sal, you suddenly pass through a small place, which grabs your attention by virtue of its houses bordered in strong blue, by a geometric pattern of streets, and by the great similarity in the outlines of many of its dwellings.

The village dates back at least to the 16th century, as demonstrated by the two paintings on wood to be found in its Igreja Matriz (parish church). In the twentieth century, two agricultural enterprises constructed a series of houses for their employees, and in the middle of the century a cinema-theatre was added, which is worth a visit for the gracefulness of its proportions. Later, the employees began to buy the houses they inhabited, providing the village with greater stability in relation to its inhabitants, who made their living in an agriculture divided between oak-woodland pasture and irrigated fields. Advantage has been taken of the road leading to the beaches in order to attract passers-by with the village’s gastronomic heritage.

Tens of metres away, one of the arms of the Pego do Altar reservoir offers the possibility of practising fishing and nautical sports, or long walks along the edge of the water to watch the storks between their nests and the rice-fields. The local handicrafts produce work in leather and willow, wood, horn and cork, as well as pastoral art.
Thirteen kilometres away is the town of Alcácer do Sal, an important crossway since Roman times and the meeting point with the River Sado, which has an interesting Nature Reserve.
