Overview of Pias
Overview of Pias

On the undulating outline of the landscape of a land abundant in bread, olive oil and wine, in continuity and a harmony broken only by the clock tower (18th century), rise the low houses of the village of Pias.

As well as the chapel of Santa Luzia (15th–17th centuries), the true heritage to be discovered in this village of the Lower Alentejo are the people. Land of storytellers and popular poets, it is especially for the art of Alentejan cante (singing) that they are most known. Still from the hands of these patient and skilful people are produced hand-knitted socks, objects in willow and wrought iron, traditional sweetmeats, and a gastronomy created from simple products, such as poejada (made with pennyroyal), cogumelos de campo com feijão (field mushrooms with beans), cozido de couves (a stew featuring cabbage), or feijão de azeite com peixe frito (beans in olive oil with fried fish). Also there is pork from the black pig, and game, nobly accompanied by Pias wine. Then get engaged in conversation, and discover a universe of popular wisdom.

A few kilometres to the west, the village of Brinches is the land of cheese, cured meats and bread, still made in the traditional way. It is almost equidistant from Moura to the north and Serpa to the southwest, places of enormous value in terms of heritage. The administrative centre for this council area, Serpa has the Mediaeval castle and clock tower, the Igreja Matriz (parish church) and the church of S. Salvador (13th–17th centuries), the chapels of São Pedro, Nª. Sª. de Guadalupe, Stª. Iria and Santana (16th century), the church of Nª. Sª. da Saúde, the palace of the Counts of Ficalho, the aqueduct and the scoop-wheel for raising water (17th century).
